Wellington at Hershey's Mill Hosts 105th Birthday Celebration

May 21, 2018

Ernestine’s Gierman, a resident of Wellington at Hershey's Mill in West Chester, Penn., celebrated a very special 105th birthday.

Ernestine says she “feels great” and attributes her longevity to “clean living.” Her mother and brother lived into their 90s.

Born in Irvington, N.J., Ernestine and her husband, Norman, raised a daughter, Marilyn, who blessed her with three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Marilyn visits often and takes her mother on long walks.

After attending Montclair State University in New Jersey, she became a teacher. She encouraged one particular student to go to college and become a psychiatrist. Now retired and in his 90s, the psychiatrist keeps in touch with Marilyn and remains grateful to Ernestine for setting him on the right path.

An avid tennis player, gardener and knitter, Ernestine reads and exercises to maintain her health -- never missing a morning exercise. In beautiful weather, you can always find her outdoors.

Indoors, she likes to self-propel her wheelchair around the community and socialize with associates. Wherever she needs to go, she cuts through the nurse’s station. “Everyone loves Ernestine,” says Programming Director Antoine Riley. “We love when she comes up and holds our hands, smiles and puts some sunshine in our day.”
